From their website:
Gem Mountain is proud to announce the opening of the Hoot Owl Mine. Step back in time as we take you to one of the oldest mines in our area. This impressive mine has been dormant for many years. At one time Aquamarine stones weighing up to 150 lb. were found along with Emeralds. Material from other mines will be brought to this location and will be mixed with Hoot Owl material that has never been gone through. Come share in our new experience as we try to unearth the find of a lifetime!
Tours of the Brushy Creek Aquamarine Mine are conducted as weather permits so please call our toll-free number for more information. These trips are available by reservation only…and they are popular, so PLEASE reserve as soon as possible. During peak holiday periods you should call or email us as far in advance as possible. The tours leave at 10 am and return around 2 pm. Cost is $75 per adult and $35 for kids 11 and under. Transportation, equipment, and a guide are provided.
Note: We require at least 6 people to a trip.
The Brushy Creek Mine is Gem Mountain’s primary source of aquamarine. Operations at the mine include the use of pneumatic tools by our staff to break apart large pieces of rock in order to locate and mine the aquamarine. Once the gemstone is free of the rock, it can be collected, cleaned off, and sorted for size, shape, and color. Other local materials include Wiseman aquamarine, Crabtree emerald, as well as moonstones, garnet, citrine, ruby, amethyst, sapphire and others.
