On paper, walking from one end of the tiny town of Julian in San Diego County to the other should take 15 minutes, tops. Or all day.
There were no street fairs or pedestrian-heavy sidewalks to blame for my glacial pace along the five blocks that make up Main Street on a recent visit. Just apples. Every couple of steps brought temptation in new mouthwatering variations: pies, ciders, syrups, dumplings, shakes, caramels and … well, you get the idea.
Each year Julian draws thousands of visitors on the strength of its reputation as an apple town. And with good reason – the apple pie alone is worth the trip. But after the pie coma has worn off, don’t overlook the other diversions in this folksy hill town rich with Gold Rush history.
